"Not a problem with the [PS3] unit itself..."

...said Nanako Kato, spokeswoman for Sony, on the issue of all the Playstation 3 demo units having to be reset due to overheating issues at the Tokyo Game Show.

To add to the embarrassment, Sony saw a 2.75 percent drop in its shares this morning due to the malfunctioning consoles.

"While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue," analyst David Gibson of Macquarie Equities wrote. "We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company."

Sony's official statement concludes the problem to be with the kiosks that the units were stationed in, and Kato went on to say that "for a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

Without blatantly revealing a sense of bias, let's just say that working at Game Crazy and having 4 consoles including one Xbox 360 stuck in a tiny circular cabinet for demo units, none of the systems have over-heated. Sony, as always, I'm calling shens. Take it as you will.

Yeah, for those of you considering waiting on getting a PS3, this may make your decision easier. I'm sure this problem will eventually be corrected (probably quite shortly, but not in time for launch). People do shove multiple systems, a DVD/VCR Player, and a TV in a small cabinet expecting no problems.

However if you do wish to jam your relatively airtight cabinet, and don't want to wait, let me recomend buying a small desk fan. I have a router that overheats easily, but it's amazing how flawlessly it works with a little wind blowing on it when in use. But for many people (or most, as the rep suggests) it won't be a problem.
