Online Wii Functions Revealed
It seems all the good news is about Nintendo’s Wii console these days, which personally, I find to be particularly interesting. The latest and greatest announcement, other than our previous break on North American release details, comes from Nintendo of America’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime.
Today, Fils-Aime has revealed some details about the Wii’s user interface, dubbed Wii Channels. Essentially, the Wii Channel Menu is the access point for all of the consoles main functions – allowing users to pick and choose games, upload and store photos, and create playable caricatures. Message Board users will be particularly pleased with the option to create your own custom avatar using the “Mii” channel, which can then be stored in the Wii remote and imported into games. We… Me… how clever is that shit!
Not only will these functions be in play here, but users will be able to access news and weather reports, which are conveniently updated through the WiiConnect24 service. No more Fox 5 News in the morning, and while you’re at it, ditch your AIM program. Wii users will be able to send and receive messages to other Wii units, as well as mobile phones. A dedicated channel for Internet access is also featured, where users can browse the web using the Wii remote.
The best news is old news, but still news to add none the less. In addition to all of these great features, I wanted to point out for those that are unaware and living in a cave somewhere that Wii is completely backwards compatible with previous Nintendo platforms. Users will be able to download software from the N64, NES, and SNES back catalogue, as well as being fully compatible with the entire GameCube library, allowing players to use original GameCube discs with the Wii console.
Fricken’ sweet! I look forward to it, merely for the backwards compatibility. There’s nothing like Golden Eye.

While I agree that this story is very good news (very interesting too), I definitely disagree that all news latley has been good news.
For example, the price and date released yesterday are less than ideal. Much of the community is unhappy with this.
$250... or $499. You choose.
Don't get me wrong, I was betting on it being $250...that said, many people expected and demanded $200 and think anything more is outrageous. And the reason is that there are minor upgrades to much of the internal specs of the Wii over the Cube, where as PS3 + Xbox 360 are both big leaps forward in power (even if not as much in innovation).
