9 Million Wiis by January!?!
Last week, we reported that 1 million Wiis wil be available in the North American continent for purchase at launch. Now there are rumors (and somewhat loose ones at this point, so take this with a grain of salt) that there are alread TWO million units produced, and that there could be seven to nine million produced by the end of 2006. As all gaming fans know, there is typically a shortage (sometimes a massive one) in the weeks and months after a console launch, however if these numbers are accurate, Nintendo is doing its best to drastically reduce any potential shortage. But even at these possible numbers, don't expect a surplus. As reported a couple of minutes ago, the Wii is likely to be one of the top-selling toys.
Nintendo always strives to differentiate itself from its competitors (although it doesn't necessairly aknowledge them as such), and by making extensive efforts to meet demand in the launch timeframe, they are embracing a cutting edge strategy. Stay tuned: as we get updated and/or confirmed numbers, or if game stores begin offering more pre-orders we'll let you know.
